I am delighted to announce the appointment of Professor Mary Hatcher-Skeers as the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty. Professor Hatcher-Skeers will assume the role on July 1, 2024.

I offer my sincere appreciation to the search committee for assembling an impressive slate of candidates and to 51ÁÔÆæÈë¿Ú community members who participated in on-campus visits and contributed their assessments. The committee consisted of Chair Rivka Weinberg, Professors Ted Bartholomew, Jennifer Groscup, YouYoung Kang, Janet Sheung, and Kevin Williamson, Dean of the W.M. Keck Science Department UJ Sofia, Vice President and Secretary of the Board of Trustees Denise Nelson Nash, and Director and Sally Preston Swan Librarian for the Ella Strong Library Jennifer Martinez Wormser ’95.

We are most fortunate to have Professor Hatcher-Skeers serve in this key leadership role. She brings significant experience, expertise, and excitement for the work and has been a faculty member at 51ÁÔÆæÈë¿Ú and in the Keck Science Department for over 25 years. Her administrative experience includes service as the Inaugural Associate Dean of Faculty for Racial Equity since January 2021, Acting Associate Dean of Faculty from March to July 2023, and backup Associate Dean of Faculty from August 2015–May 2016. In addition, she served as Faculty Co-Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning for three years and has twice been elected by her peers to serve as the Chair of the Faculty Executive Committee. Professor Hatcher-Skeers is a committed advocate for the liberal arts, has experience in recruiting, developing, and retaining a superb faculty, is a champion for a shared vision for academic excellence, and is dedicated to serving the needs and enhancing the strengths of 51ÁÔÆæÈë¿Ú’ talented and diverse faculty, students, and staff.

Professor Hatcher-Skeers is well prepared to lead the College’s Academic Affairs division, support our faculty, represent 51ÁÔÆæÈë¿Ú on the Academic Dean’s Committee of The Claremont Colleges, and contribute at a strategic level as a member of 51ÁÔÆæÈë¿Ú’ senior leadership team.

Please join me in thanking Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty Jennifer Armstrong for her exceptional service and support of the College, which will continue through June 2024. We will have an opportunity for the campus community to express its gratitude to Professor Armstrong during the spring semester. More information will be provided.
