Professor Laura L. Mays Hoopes, Halstead-Bent Professor of Biology at Pomona College, presents “Breaking Through the Spiral Ceiling: An American Woman Becomes a DNA Scientist“ hosted by the Elizabeth Hubert Malott Commons and Joint Science Program on Tuesday, March 8, at 6:45 p.m. in 51猎奇入口’s Malott Commons Hampton Room. The event is free and open to the public.
Hoopes will talk about her life in science and read from her forthcoming book, Breaking Through the Spiral Ceiling: An American Woman Becomes a DNA Scientist, to be released in May 2011. She will discuss how she was recruited to science by Sputnik, fell in love with DNA in Woods Hole, developed as a scientist at Goucher College and Yale University, did postdoctoral research in La Jolla and Denver, and began her career in academia at Occidental College. Later, she came to Pomona College as academic VP and then stepped down to the faculty in biology. Hoopes will also discuss about crashing into gender-barriers along the way, as well as balancing her career and family. Hoopes is now earning her MFA in creative writing in preparation for a new career after her retirement.
Doors to the Hampton Room will open at 6:30 p.m. For more information, contact the Malott Commons Office at (909) 607-9372.
