L.A. Times Highlights “Revolution and Ritual” Exhibition at Ruth Chandler Williamson Gallery

In her recent column highlighting art and cultural exhibitions听slated forthe听Getty听Foundation’s Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA听initiative, the听, whose听photographs听will be featured听inthe听Ruth Chandler Williamson Gallery’s.

Revolution and Ritualfocuses on the works of the three Mexican women photographers who听have explored听and transformed听notions of Mexican identity in images that range from the documentary to the poetic. In her interview with Iturbide, now 75,听Times听columnist Miranda notes that Iturbide has had a knack for capturing the many layers of Mexican identity鈥攖he indigenous draped in the Catholic and the modern. Critic Marta Dah脙鲁 writes in the exhibition catalog that Iturbide is part of a generation of photographers who “realized the complex task of visualizing the survival of [indigenous] cultural beliefs.”

 

Revolution and Ritual听is part of Pacific Standard Time:听LA/LA, a far-reaching and ambitious exploration of Latin American art in dialogue with Los Angeles听that will take听place from September 2017 through January 2018 at more than 70 cultural institutions across Southern California, from Los Angeles to Palm Springs and from San Diego to Santa Barbara.

 

The received lead grants from the Getty in support of the planning and implementation of the exhibition and publication.
