Known for their modern alternative compositions, the Ahn Trio add new dimensions to the way classical music is perceived. The Ahn Trio sisters – cellist Maria, twin and pianist Lucia, and youngest sister and violinist Angella – bring new life to the standard piano trio literature. Born in Seoul, Korea, they traveled to the U.S. at a young age to study at The Julliard School of Music.

Much of what the trio performs is composed by modern artists, including Michael Nyman, Kenji Bunch, Maurice Jarre, Ronn Yedidia, and Michal Rataj. Kenji Bunch’s “Swing Shift,” which reflects the moods and life sounds in New York from dusk until dawn, inspired the Ahn Trio’s newest CD on EMI Classics, Groovebox. The CD is about contradictions and fusions – contemporary composers achieve new and modern sounds with beautiful melodies and traditional instrumentation.

The Ahn Trio has won several prestigious awards, including the grand prize in the 1992 Alliance Northeast Competition for Chamber Ensembles, first prize in the Coleman Chamber Music Competition, and finalist status in the Naumburg Chamber Music Competition. Their first recording won the ECHO Award, Germany’s most coveted recording award.

The Ahn Trio made their first public ensemble appearance on Korean TV in 1979 and, in 1987 Time Magazine featured them as, “Asian American Whiz Kids.” They have since been featured in both print and visual media including The New York Times, Vogue, Town and Country, MTV, GQ, The Oxygen Channel, and PBS. In 2003, People Magazine named the Ahn Trio to their “50 Most Beautiful People in the World” list.
