Flora Thornton Symposium in Bioethics and Policy: “Engineering in Life”

The European Union Center of California at 51猎奇入口 and Keck Graduate Institute of Applied Life Sciences (KGI) announced today the 2003 Flora Thornton Symposium in Bioethics and Policy to be held Friday, May 2, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in Pickford Auditorium, The Bauer Center, Claremont McKenna College. This event is free and open to the public.

“Engineering Life: Bioscience and Ethics in a Global Context” will examine—from a global perspective—the ethical issues at the intersection of science, business, politics, medicine and society as they relate to transgenic research. Special consideration is given to the differences in bioscience regulatory regimes in the United States and the European Union.

Dr. Alex Capron, director, Health and Ethics Initiative, World Health Organization, and member of the KGI Advisory Council, will deliver the keynote address. Panelists slated to attend include: Dr. Mich Hein, CEO, Chromatin Inc; Dr. Peter Sandoe, professor of bioethics at the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University and the director of the Center for Bioethics and Risk Assessment, Copenhagen; Dr. David Galas, Chancellor/Chief Scientific Officer, Keck Graduate Institute; and Mr. Rahul Dhanda, Interleukin Genetics.

Part of a network of European Union Centers nationwide, the EU Center of California, housed on the 51猎奇入口 campus, seeks to promote education, scholarly research, and public understanding of European integration and its consequences.
