Best-selling author and illustrator Marjane Satrapi will come to 51猎奇入口 on Thursday, April 9, 2009, to discuss her memoir Persepolis, as part of the Alexa Fullerton Hampton Speaker Series: Voice and Vision. The series is made possible through the generous bequest of 51猎奇入口 alumna Alexa Fullerton Hampton ’42. The event will be held at 7:30 p.m. in Garrison Theater, 51猎奇入口 Performing Arts Center, and is free and open to the public.
Born in Rasht, Iran, Satrapi grew up part Turkmen, part Muslim, part Zoroastrian in Tehran, where she studied at the Lyc脙漏e Fran脙搂ais before moving to Vienna at age 14. In 1997, Satrapi moved to Paris and met Christophe Blaine, who introduced her to l’Atelier des Vosges. There, she met many of France’s “new wave” comic book artists. She currently resides in Paris, where her illustrations appear regularly in magazines and newspapers.
Her memoir, Persepolis, tells the story of her youth in Iran in the 1970s and 80s, through the Islamic Revolution and war with Iraq. Originally published in France in four volumes, the memoir was greeted with much acclaim, spurring the translation into many languages, including German, Dutch, Spanish, and Italian. The animated film adaptation has garnered huge international acclaim and won several awards and a nomination for an Academy Award for “Best Animated Feature Film” in 2008. Satrapi is also the author of several children’s and adult books, including Monsters are Afraid of the Mood and Chicken with Plums.
Doors to Garrison Theater will open at 7:00 p.m. A book signing in the lobby will follow the presentation; books will be available for purchase before and after the event. For more information, please contact the Malott Commons Office at (909) 607-9372.
