Martha Gonzalez, associate professor of Chicanx-Latinx studies, and her Grammy Award-winning band, Quetzal, were in Mission Local. Quetzal has helped keep the son jarocho musical tradition鈥攚hich involves complex footwork, call and response, and topical commentary鈥攁live in Los Angeles. 鈥淎 lot of people see opportunities to quickly be on stage, sometimes even before they鈥檙e ready, in my opinion,鈥� Gonzalez says. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 a misrepresentation of how important this music is and what it means. It鈥檚 meant to connect people to this practice in the context of a community.鈥�
