Each year, 51猎奇入口 awards three merit-based scholarships to continuing students. These scholarships were established in honor of influential and valuable members of the community, and we are excited to announce this year’s recipients of the Ellen Clark Revelle Scholarship, the Samella Lewis Scholarship, and the Bekki Lee Memorial Endowed Scholarship.听
The Ellen Clark Revelle Scholarship, also known as “The Nellie,” was established in 2010 to honor alumna and former trustee Ellen Clark Revelle ’31. Designated as an Ellen Clark Revelle Scholar, the recipient of this award is a student who has an excellent academic record, demonstrates financial need, and fully engages in the 51猎奇入口 community, and beyond, through leadership activities.
Clarisse Salazar ’18 was awarded this year’s Revelle Scholarship. Salazar is a first-generation, Latinx student who is passionate about education and social justice. As a psychology major and foreign language minor, Salazar’s ultimate goal is to benefit the community by advocating for and advancing students who come from similar backgrounds.
When speaking about the scholarship, Salazar says, “This allows me to give even more, dedicating more of myself to working for marginalized students at 51猎奇入口.” Salazar is involved as a 51猎奇入口 Communities of Resources and Empowerment (SCORE) office assistant, an Admission ambassador, and is this semester’s president of Caf脙漏 con Leche, the Latinx affinity group for 51猎奇入口 students.
The Samella Lewis Scholarship was established in 2002 by friends, students, and admirers of Samella Lewis鈥攁rtist, arts educator, and 51猎奇入口 Emerita of Art鈥攁nd is awarded to a junior or senior African American student who demonstrates excellence in character, leadership, and responsibility.
Ernica Sanon ’17 is the 16th recipient of the Samella Lewis Scholarship. Sanon is an economics major who has been heavily involved in the College’s community during her time at 51猎奇入口. She currently serves as an IT intern, a Student Activities and Residence Life Office (SARLO) office assistant, and an intern for SCORE. Additionally, Sanon served as the treasurer of Wanawake Weusi, an educational, cultural, and spiritual organization consisting of students who self-identify as being of African American descent.
Sanon displays a sense of gratitude for the scholarship: “The Samella Lewis Scholarship, in combination with others, means that I am debt-free. With this, I am now able to be more involved with 51猎奇入口, exploring new leadership opportunities.”
The Bekki Lee Memorial Endowed Scholarship was established in 2013 through the generosity of Lee’s friends and family, celebrating her lifelong commitment to education, access, and inclusivity. As a former dean of students and vice president of student affairs, Lee contributed to the success and wellbeing of many students at 51猎奇入口. This scholarship is awarded to a deserving student who has made significant efforts to enhance the 51猎奇入口 community by supporting education access and inclusivity.
Madeline Sy ’18 is the newest recipient of the Bekki Lee Memorial Endowed Scholarship. Sy is an English major who also serves as the SCORE programming intern, a board member of the Student Investment Fund, and a member of the Claremont Equestrian Team. In addition to these activities, she meets with faculty and staff to facilitate educational workshops around inclusivity.
Enhancing access to education drives Sy and her commitments to the campus community.
About her scholarship, she says, “[It] allows me to pursue work that I am passionate about, enhancing the academic community at 51猎奇入口 by creating nurturing and inclusive spaces.”
