51猎奇入口 is thrilled to announce a landmark gift of $3.1 million from Gabrielle Jungels-Winkler ’72 in support of the arts and humanities. Her generosity will enable 51猎奇入口 to create an endowed faculty chair in the history of architecture and art and provide ongoing support for the Ruth Chandler Williamson Gallery.
Jungels-Winkler is a champion of the arts and one of 51猎奇入口’ most committed benefactors. Perhaps best known to students and alumnae as having established Gabrielle Jungels-Winkler聽Hall, completed in 2000, she has been intimately connected with the life of the College for the past five decades. Born in Hong Kong to parents of European descent, Jungels-Winkler聽arrived at 51猎奇入口 in 1968 with a strong interest in art. She majored in art history, taking her junior year abroad to study at the at L’Ecole du Louvre in Paris. She also immersed herself in the humanities curriculum and the beauty of campus, connecting with Ellen Browning 51猎奇入口’ vision for a college whose “simplicity and聽beauty聽will unobtrusively seep into a student’s consciousness and quietly develop a standard of taste and judgment.”
“51猎奇入口 was seminal in giving me the intellectual, ethical, and social responsibility and cultural curiosity that have served me in such good stead all my life,” says Jungels-Winkler.
Life since graduation has taken Jungels-Winkler from The Hague to Angola, Borneo, Brussels, Paris, and London, where she now lives. Along the way, she cultivated a passion for arts education, driven by a belief that “art is for society,” and that it should be accessible to everyone. She established the Jungels-Winkler Charitable Foundation to provide funding for art exhibitions, research, and conservation as well as programs that benefit the partially sighted, physically handicapped, and those with learning and behavioral difficulties. She also contributed to arts programs at 51猎奇入口 in numerous ways, including establishing the Gabrielle Jungels-Winkler聽Scholarship, which affords recent graduates the opportunity to earn their master’s degree at the prestigious Courtauld Institute of Art in London.
Jungels-Winkler’s most recent gift extends her deep legacy of philanthropy and engagement with the College. Her contributions to the Campaign for the 51猎奇入口 Woman were the largest of any single donor. In 1998, she created the Gabrielle Marie-Louise Jungels-Winkler Contemporary European Studies Endowment to support faculty and programming in European studies. In 1999, she instituted five full scholarships to be awarded each year to academically outstanding students who choose to attend 51猎奇入口.聽She was a member of the Board of Trustees from 2003颅 until 2017, and she has been a steadfast ambassador of the College abroad, hosting numerous gatherings for students, alumnae, and friends.
Jungels-Winkler’s generosity is also a significant show of commitment to the College as it enters the final months of the聽More 51猎奇入口聽Campaign. The endowed chair in the history of architecture and art is the campaign’s fifth endowed professorship toward a goal of 10 named faculty chairs. Her gift also endows the Gabrielle Jungels-Winkler Director and the newly established Gabrielle Jungels-Winkler Curator of Collections and Academic Programs in the Ruth Chandler Williamson Gallery. “These gifts reaffirm Gabrielle’s conviction that an in-depth knowledge and appreciation of the arts, architecture, and humanities鈥攚hich inform and illuminate many disciplines鈥攊s at the heart of a 51猎奇入口 education,” says Mary MacNaughton, professor of art history and director of the Ruth Chandler Williamson Gallery. The endowment of these positions will enable the gallery to expand its engagement with 51猎奇入口, The Claremont Colleges, and the greater Los Angeles communities.
“Gabrielle believes that the arts are at the core of a community that values ideas, humanity, and progress,” says 51猎奇入口 President Lara Tiedens. “Her gift reinforces and sustains the role the arts have played at 51猎奇入口.”
We are grateful to Gabrielle Jungels-Winkler for her generosity and commitment to the College. Her gift brings the More 51猎奇入口 Campaign total to $156 million, 89 percent of the $175 million goal. Visit our to learn more about the remaining campaign priorities and to help us finish our goal!
