Dr. George Sanchez, Professor of American Studies & Ethnicity and History and Vice Dean for Diversity and Strategic Initiatives at the University of Southern California, will be the keynote speaker for the 7C Faculty Diversity Awards on Wednesday, February 22nd at 3:30 p.m. in Balch Auditorium. His topic is:聽 “Do They Really Want Me?: Faculty of Color, Student Protests, and the Future of Predominantly White Campuses”聽聽 An award-winning scholar of Chicano history and immigration who joined the USC Dornsife College faculty in 1997, Sanchez is director of the USC Center for Diversity and Democracy. He is the former director of American studies and ethnicity, a program he helped build into one of the top American and ethnic studies departments in the nation. A renowned mentor, he runs the USC Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship Program and initiated a First Generation Student Initiative at USC.聽 He has placed forty former Ph.D. students in tenure-track positions throughout the United States.聽 A former president of the American Studies Association, he received the Outstanding Latino/a Faculty in Higher Education (Research Institutions) Award from the American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education, Inc., the first ever Equity Award for excellence in recruiting and retaining underrepresented populations in the historical profession from the American Historical Association, and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Immigration and Ethnic History Society this year.聽聽 Please come to honor our colleagues Jean Reith Schroedel (CGU), Diana Selig (CMC), and Wei-Chin Hwang (CMC), recipients of this year’s awards.
